Before buying any hub or motor, we identify the protocol already in place at your home. Picking the right ecosystem avoids the pile of remotes and the cross-brand mismatches we see every week on site.

Somfy RTS
The historic standard, compatible with roughly 90% of the motorized fleet in Luxembourg. Simple and robust, but no feedback: the remote sends the order with no confirmation.
868–870 MHz · Two-way · Encrypted
Somfy io-homecontrol
The current protocol on new shutters: feedback (the shutter confirms its position), AES encryption, secure pairing. Required for HomeKit scenes and reliable remote control.
Multi-protocol hub
TaHoma Switch

A smart home is only worth it if it makes daily life easier. Here are four scenes deployed for our Luxembourg clients — all of them configurable in under an hour once the hub is in place.
Scene 01
All shutters close at 10 pm
Time-based TaHoma automation with a ±10 min random offset to simulate presence. Automatic pause on days when the garage door stays open.
Scene 02
Shutters rise on smoke detection
Two-way io scene: the detector triggers immediate opening of every shutter to help evacuation and emergency access. Priority evacuation pre-configured.
Scene 03
Gate opens as your phone arrives
iOS or Android geofencing: the gate starts opening 80 m from the house. No remote to hunt for, no waiting in the rain. Can be tuned per family member.

Shutter status feedback on iPhone
Two-way io + HomeKit: from the office you check that the child's bedroom shutter is indeed closed. Notification if one stays open past sunset.
04 /Technical limits
What cannot be motorized
We say no when it should be no. No motorization that will break down in two years, no non-standard install, no safety compromise. Here are the four cases where the upgrade is not the right answer.

Thin PVC curtains (< 3 mm) or deformed slats
An over-powered motor or a worn-out curtain leads to crushing, friction in the guides, broken attachments. We refuse motorization until the curtain is renewed.

Non-standard rolling shafts
Tubular motors require a standard diameter (40, 45, 50 or 60 mm). Old hex shafts or unusual sizes: dedicated adapter or shaft replacement — priced honestly.

Gates > 500 kg or > 4 m leaf
Beyond that, industrial hydraulic-ram motorization is required (not residential). We refer you to a specialist manufacturer instead of pushing a domestic CAME motor to failure.

Motorization without a manual emergency release
Not compliant with EN 13241 and dangerous on a power cut. We refuse any install without an accessible manual release — your safety comes before the quote.
Our rule: if the install won't hold for 10 years under normal conditions, we don't do it. A quote turned down today is a client who'll call us back in ten years for a real project — not a service call in two.

Can 20-year-old manual roller shutters be motorized?
Yes in the vast majority of cases, if the curtain, the guides and the shaft are sound. We remove the crank, open the box, measure the shaft (diameter, length, clearance) and pick a matching tubular motor. If the curtain is deformed or the slats tired, we say so before motorizing — otherwise it's guaranteed to end up in service within 18 months.

Difference between Somfy RTS and io-homecontrol — should you migrate?
RTS (433 MHz, one-way) is enough for basic use: open, close, simple time-based scene. io-homecontrol (868 MHz, two-way, encrypted) adds status feedback (the shutter confirms its position), radio anti-intrusion security and HomeKit compatibility. Migration makes sense if you want Apple HomeKit, reliable scenes or deep smart home integration. Otherwise RTS is still perfectly valid.

TaHoma Switch vs TaHoma Pro — which one to pick?
TaHoma Switch is enough for a residential home: shutters, gate, garage door, Zigbee lighting, time-based scenes, Alexa/Google/HomeKit. TaHoma Pro targets large homes, small apartment blocks or light commercial with dozens of devices, advanced multi-user control and remote supervision. In 90% of Luxembourg residential cases, TaHoma Switch is the right pick.

Alexa or Google Home with Somfy — which works better in Luxembourg?
Both work through the official Somfy/TaHoma skill. Google Home is often smoother for French-with-Luxembourg-accent voice commands, Alexa offers more powerful routines. For a mixed FR/DE/EN household, Google Home tends to adapt better. HomeKit is still the best choice if you are 100% Apple — but it requires io-homecontrol on the motor side.
05Can you mix several brands on TaHoma?
Can you mix several brands on TaHoma?
Partly, yes. TaHoma Switch natively drives Somfy RTS/io, a large part of Zigbee 3.0, some Velux, Simu and Somfy-compatible Hörmann devices. For a truly multi-brand fleet (native Hörmann BiSecur, proprietary BFT or CAME), we recommend a Z-Wave/Zigbee bridge or a Home Assistant box alongside. We map your existing hardware before proposing the topology.
06Can you keep the wall switch after motorization?
Can you keep the wall switch after motorization?
Yes, and we recommend it. A motorized shutter without a wall switch becomes unusable if the hub fails or the phone is dead. We systematically wire a hardwired up/down switch in parallel with the radio remote and the smart home. Three independent command paths = zero lock-out scenario.
