Key turns freely without engaging the bolt

Likely causes
  • Broken latch spring inside the lock40%
  • Cylinder cam disconnected from the mechanism35%
  • Cylinder fixing screw loose25%
Solution
DIY fix

First check the cylinder fixing screw (5 mm screw on the door edge). If loose, retightening gently may be enough.

Fermé-Lux intervention

Cylinder removal, cam/mechanism diagnosis. Cylinder or lock case replacement based on observed wear.

Key does not go in or catches on insertion

Likely causes
  • Dust and metal particles inside the cylinder50%
  • Worn pins after thousands of cycles30%
  • Deformed key or poor-quality copy20%
Solution
DIY fix

Apply powdered graphite (no WD-40, no oil: they attract dust and jam the pins). Then test the original manufacturer's key, not a copy.

Fermé-Lux intervention

Pressure cleaning of the cylinder, or replacement if the pins are too scored.

Key stuck halfway, impossible to remove

Likely causes
  • Pin stuck in an intermediate position45%
  • Metal fragment inside the plug30%
  • Cam rubbing against misaligned frame25%
Solution
DIY fix

Never apply sideways force (risk of snapping the key). Try gentle back-and-forth motion while lightly pushing the door to release pressure.

Fermé-Lux intervention

Key extraction with specific tools. If fragment or pin jammed, cylinder replacement as the pins are permanently marked.

  • Attempted break-in (bumping, picking)15%
Solution
DIY fix

Push nothing. Do not insert another key, a needle or a screwdriver: you will push the fragment deeper.

Fermé-Lux intervention

Fragment extraction with extraction pliers or broken-key kit. Success in 90 % of cases without damaging the cylinder. Otherwise full replacement.

NEVER do this

  • 01

Never spray WD-40 or oil into a cylinder

Oil attracts dust and permanently jams the pins — use powdered graphite instead

  • 02

Never push a broken key with another key or sharp object

You drive the fragment deeper and damage the pins — leave it to a technician with an extraction tool

  • 03

Never break down the door or frame to get in

Repairing a damaged door costs far more than replacing a cylinder — almost every door can be opened without destruction

  • 04

Never dismantle a lock in a co-ownership without the owner's agreement

The cylinder may be part of the building's master-key plan — unilateral replacement means conflict and re-billing

  • 05

Never force a frozen lock or pour hot water on it

The key snaps inside the cylinder and water instantly forms thicker ice — warming the key with a lighter is enough

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A2P (Assurance Prévention Protection) is the French anti-break-in certification recognised by Luxembourg insurers. BP1 resists 5 min, BP2 10 min, BP3 15 min against destructive attacks (drilling, pulling, bumping, picking). In Luxembourg many home-insurance contracts require at least BP2 on entrance doors; BP3 is recommended on isolated ground floors or in border areas.

In summary

In summary

A2P BP2 certified cylinders resist break-ins for 10 minutes; BP3 resist 15 minutes. For a main residence in a sensitive area, BP3 is recommended. After an attempted break-in, usually only the cylinder needs changing — not the multi-point lock. Always store the A2P ownership card in a safe: it conditions key reproduction and the master-key plan.
